The primary function of the Department is to “formulate, implement, monitor and evaluate the socio-economic policies of the Island Territory of St. Maarten with the ultimate purpose of stimulating economic growth and development”.
As an island nation whose economy is based on one industry - tourism - it is of the utmost importance that every visitor - either virtual or real -- to St. Maarten has a positive and memorable experience. An experience that leaves you wanting more as you browse the web, just as you might want one or two days more at the end of your vacation stay.
In November 2006, the new terminal building at the Princess Juliana International Airport was opened. This new facility provides a capacity of 2.5 million passengers per year, and has afforded St. Maarten an unique opportunity to grow its reputation and network within the travel and tourism industry.
Hotel accommodations on St. Maarten range from luxurious multi-story modern hotels to quaint, often personalized guesthouses. In recent years, the island has seen rapid growth in the condominium market, with the construction of several secluded properties that offer exclusive and well-secured dwellings. The overall economic strategy currently being executed will allow for a greater balance in the island’s development.
Through further advancement of the overall tourism product and tourism segments, diversification of the economy and pro-active measures to improve the social infrastructure. This will ultimately enhance the overall visitor experience and standard of living for the entire community of St. Maarten.
